On August 3, 2010, Mike Oatridge (VP Honda Manufacturing – Alabama) spoke at the CAR Management Briefing
Seminar in Traverse City, Michigan. During his speech he outlined the path that Honda has taken in terms of production in the US and Canada. To us here at Humantech, they seem to have learned from experiences early-on and have come up with a strong development process focused not only on producing a good quality product for their customers, but also ensuring they take into consideration everyone involved with the build at the shop level.
Mr. Oatridge stated that “a key focus throughout this process was ergonomics for the associate. Making things more ergonomically friendly, reducing the stress of a given process has been a long-standing commitment within our North American manufacturing plants”. He went on to express that “a product that is easier for our associates to build is obviously good for associates, but it’s also good for our customers because easier-to-build vehicles allow our associates to place an even greater focus on quality”.
It’s nice to see recognition of the impact that ergonomics can have on quality, productivity and cost from someone at the operations level.
