Historically, one of the barriers to implementing lift devices to move hospital patients has been the perception that patients won’t like sling lifts and may feel de-humanized by their use. At the recent AOHP Conference, Stanford Hospital reports having found an increase in patient satisfaction when using lifts as measured through standardized patient satisfaction scores.
They also presented anecdotal stories of patients reporting that they chose Stanford’s facility over others based on the lifts being available. Patient acceptance has been so strong that the hospital had to develop a standard process for responding to patients who wanted to know how they could get similar equipment for their home. This tells me that the often-repeated idea that patients respond negatively to lift devices in the hospital is proving to be a myth.
