One of our most popular webinars this past year was Ergonomics on the Go, where we discussed ergonomics and mobile devices. I recently came across an article from CBS News discussing the forces on your neck while texting. While we may remember from Jerry McGuire that the adult head weighs roughly 10 lbs, we don’t realize that bending the neck just a few degrees can change the force on our spine from 10 lbs to as much as 60 lbs. It’s amazing to think that when replying to an email, you could be putting more weight on your cervical spine than the weight of a 7 year old child!
So look up…well, look straight ahead! Whenever possible, raise your hands and arms to bring your phone into your direct line of sight, rather than bending your neck to see your phone. Remember to limit the amount of time on your phone or tablet.
