Ergo U: University of Michigan’s Motion Capture Sensorless Technology
In the series Ergo U: Ergonomics Research Notes from the Field, Humantech ergonomist Blake McGowan meets with ergonomics researchers from leading universities and associations across the country to share their latest findings.
Field Notes: Blake had the opportunity to meet with Dr. SangHyun Lee from the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor to learn more about its motion capture risk assessment technology. This new, sensorless method measures whole-body postures and calculates time-related analytics using only a smart phone. The software processing is near real-time, the analysis is automated, and it’s easy to use.
Blake’s Take: “This technology is groundbreaking. The software allows practitioners to improve the accuracy of assessing MSD risks and saves a significant amount of time and effort.”
Additional Activities: Blake also had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Thomas Armstrong from the College of Engineering to learn more about the recently published ACGIH® TLV® for Upper Limb Localized Fatigue. The TLV provides safe limits most healthy workers can maintain to prevent excessive or persistent upper-limb musculoskeletal fatigue during work.
About the Expert: Dr. SangHyun Lee, Ph.D., MIT, focuses on the understanding and management of construction dynamics through the design and development of mechanisms, models, and systems that integrate automatic data acquisition, computer simulation, and visualization, particularly in mega construction projects.
