I am excited to share some information about a new organization that is officially launching this week on safe patient handling. I have been involved with this organization since its inception nearly a year ago. The efforts began with a desire to establish criteria for the skills that a safe patient handling specialist should have along with a system for recognizing those skills.
Lifting and moving hospital patients and nursing home residents is one of the leading causes of musculoskeletal injuries in the United States. The majority of legislative activity regarding ergonomics standards over the last five years has focused specifically on safely handling patients. A number of professions are involved in making patient handling safer, and one of the goals of the Association of Safe Patient Handling Professionals is to bring these professions together in a single place.
The inaugural Board of Directors represent a cross section of safe patient handling practitioners, researchers, product manufacturers, and consultants dedicated to promoting this field. Information about the association and the professional certification process are available at www.asphp.org.
