For those of you who are familiar with the NIOSH lifting equation, the Canadian Centre for Occupational LiftSmallHealth and Safety offers a calculator on their website that can help you determine the Recommended Weight Limit (RWL) of a lift.

The website offers a short explanation of the equation and step-by-step directions on how to obtain the RWL. If your knowledge about the equation’s multipliers is a bit rusty, the website gives a detailed explanation of each multiplier. You can also refer to drawings that show you where to measure distances with respect to the human body. These resources enable you to more accurately calculate MSD risk to the lower back. Keep in mind that all measurements are in metric!
