In the series ErgoU:  Ergonomics Research Notes from the Field, Humantech ergonomist Blake McGowan meets with ergonomics researchers from leading universities and associations across the country to share their latest findings.

 

 

Field Notes:  Recently, Blake had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Robert Radwin  and his graduate students from the  University of Wisconsin-Madison  to learn more about their cutting-edge research that utilizes computer vision for occupational ergonomics applications.  The research uses algorithms that track pixel patterns recorded from conventional video to quantify repetitive hand motion, manual lifting, and whole-body activities.  To learn more, read the article,“Using Smartphone Technology to Combat Workplace Injury.”

 

Blake’s Take: It is simply amazing that the use of smartphone technology and computer vision algorithms can help practitioners calculate the ACGIH hand activity level and the NIOSH Lifting Equation.

Additional Activities: Blake also had the opportunity to lecture to the award-winning UW Madison Student Chapter of the Human Factors & Ergonomics Society about communicating the value of ergonomics to business stakeholders.

About the Expert: Dr. Robert Radwin focuses his research on the physiological and biomechanical aspects of work. He investigates how to better design jobs, equipment, tools, products, and environments in which people play a significant role, so that human capabilities are maximized, physical stress and fatigue are minimized, and work is optimized. Robert received a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.
