Five Tips to Refresh Your Workstation

by Parul Lahoti, CPE

Happy New Year! It’s that time of the year to refresh and reset our lives. While many of us make resolutions and take on personal health goals, rarely do we focus on improving our workspace or work habits. A workspace that is set up properly can improve your overall health and wellness. Incorporating these tips into your work routine will help you stay productive and healthy all year long. messyoffice

  1. De-clutter and organize your workspace. It’s easy for clutter to pile up, especially during the December crunch when things need to get done. Consider taking a few moments to clean your desk. Say goodbye to old keyboard crumbs! Place the items you use most within an arm’s reach. Putting things in close proximity will prevent you from having to reach too far, which could strain your back.
  2. Adjust your workstation and peripherals. Rid yourself of the post-holiday slump; sit up straight in your chair and adjust your workstation using Humantech’s Four Points of Contact®. It’s also a good idea to understand how to properly adjust your chair. If you do not know how to adjust your chair, visit the manufacturer’s website.
  3. Build in good habits, one at a time. Pick one new work habit to adopt each week, be it using the copy machine farthest away from your workstation to keep you more active during the work day, or alternating between sitting and standing postures. These habits will have positive effects on your overall well-being.
  4. Upgrade, replace, and recycle your equipment when needed. If your mouse is not as sensitive as you’d like or if your keyboard requires high-force finger motions, it’s time to ask your company representative for more appropriate equipment. It’s not unusual for employees to keep using the clunky or broken devices because they don’t know where to go or who to ask for new equipment.
  5. Share your story. The best motivator for change can be sharing your goals with others and creating new habits together. Share your workstation refresh plan with a cube mate or join your local ergonomics team. Having a cheerleader, or an enforcer, applaud your progress or remind you of your desired outcome will help you meet your goals. Once you get started, you may find yourself helping more than just yourself.
