Humantech, experts in workplace improvement, announced today that it has been honored with the 2014 When Work Works Award, formerly known as the Alfred P. Sloan Awards for Excellence in Workplace Effectiveness and Flexibility. The competition identifies and recognizes organizations that use workplace flexibility as a strategy to make work better for both the employer and the employee.
This prestigious award, part of the national When Work Works project administered by the Families and Work Institute (FWI) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), recognizes employers of all sizes and types in Michigan and across the country.
“The When Work Works Award recognizes organizations that foster a culture of workplace flexibility and effectiveness, which gives them a competitive advantage. Their practices set them apart from other organizations,” said Lisa Horn, director of SHRM’s Workplace Flexibility Initiative.
To be considered, companies must go through a two-phase application process. In the first phase, employers complete an on-line application about their workplace practices and flexibility programs. Responses are then collected and measured against an ongoing national study of employers conducted by the Families and Work Institutes. Employers that rank among the top 20% of employers in the U.S. are selected and move to phase 2.
In phase 2, employees complete a questionnaire and are evaluated on six elements of an effective workplace: opportunities for learning; a culture of trust; work-life fit; supervisor support for work success; autonomy; satisfaction with earnings, benefits and opportunities for advancement.
“We’re particularly pleased to be honored by the When Work Works initiative. It is a rigorous process open to employers of all sizes across the country. The common denominator among all participating companies is that we are truly proud of our innovative workplace practices; that is certainly true for us at Humantech,” says Humantech President, Jim Good.
When Work Works is a national project that shares research results on what makes an effective and flexible workplace with the business community.
