ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Preventing Musculoskeletal Disorders in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing is the newest, complimentary e-book published by Humantech, a VelocityEHS company. Board-certified ergonomists and co-authors Kent Hatcher and Deepesh Desai share the five steps that companies with effective and sustainable ergonomics improvement processes go through to achieve a reduction in musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) risk by, on average, 51 percent.
The pharmaceutical industry has many of the same musculoskeletal disorder risk factors as other industries, such as repetitive motions and manual material handling. However, it comes with a unique set of challenges. Compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice regulations comes first, and often, this means there is less emphasis placed on how equipment will be used and who will us it. Furthermore, operations and equipment are not easy to change or modify once approved and installed.
Ergonomics is designing the workplace (or changing an existing one) to best fit the capabilities of the people at work. When applied to controlling MSDs, this means identifying and reducing or eliminating the root causes of these injuries through the setup and design of tools, workstations, equipment, and the workplace.
The first step of implementing an effective ergonomics process is to Determine the Need. Is poor workplace design a problem for your organization, and what specifically needs to be improved? By determining what problem(s) to solve, professionals can focus on the improvement process.
Since the prevention of MSDs is a primary concern, determine where MSD injuries have occurred in the past (which processes, workstations, or tasks), the body part injured (back, shoulder, wrist, etc.), and finally the severity of the injury (days away from work). These indicators will help determine if an ergonomics improvement process is needed.
In addition to determining what to solve, determine how to solve it. Evaluate the process, people, resources, and tools upon which your ergonomics improvement process is based.
