Mobile computing has become a conventional part of our daily work life. With a growing number of devices to choose from, it can be challenging to select the best one for the job. Extended use of smartphones, tablets, and laptops can result in awkward hand, wrist, and neck postures. These awkward postures, combined with frequency, can increase the risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders.

Here are some tips to ensure you are using the right tool for the task:
  1. Short-term use (< 10 minutes): Smart phones provide a quick and simple way to check email and send short messages. Accessories like headphones and dictation software can reduce the associated awkward hand and wrist postures.
  2. Short-term to moderate use (1-2 hours): Tablets are lightweight and convenient for travel. The larger display makes reading and web browsing easier. With a keyboard attachment, a tablet can be used for writing lengthy messages and reports. To improve visual access, place the tablet on a solid surface in an inclined position.
  3. Moderate to long-term use (> 4 hours): Laptops provide support for extended computing and comparing multiple data sets. Though simple to set up anywhere, they are best suited for prolonged use when connected to an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
