Winnie ThumbPredicting future workforce changes can be challenging. But it turns out, we don’t have to, because it’s an absolute known.  Write it down with a Sharpie.  There is a global workforce crisis right around the corner.  The aging population, the education skill mismatch, low birthrates in developed countries, changing employee cultures; these are just a few factors that spell major labor challenges for all employers.

This twelve-minute TED Talk will bring you up to date on what your company and your industry is facing—and not 20 or 30 years from now, but starting in the next three to five years and then accelerating to 2030 (only 15 years away).

There’s no silver bullet, no magic pill to solve this challenge. It will be a series of steps that will, ultimately, be your competitive advantage.  If we know one thing though, ergonomics has always had a positive impact on many of the challenges listed above.

  • Aging workforce – Understanding anthropometrics and designing the workplace using ergonomic design guidelines ensure that the majority of your population can work within their capabilities.
  • Education skill mismatch – Building in ergonomics means making things easier and more intuitive for people.
  • Changing employee culture – Ergonomics has been shown to improve employee morale, turnover, and absenteeism for many organizations.

So, do you have a plan to address this pending crisis? Start looking internally to find the series of steps that you can take now and prepare to rise above this coming tsunami.
