Mexican Ergonomics Standard (NOM-036): What is it and when does it apply?

Back in 2018, the Mexican Secretariat of Labor and Social Welfare published an ergonomics standard, NOM-036-1-STPS-2018, with the objective of identifying, analyzing, preventing, and controlling occupational risk factors associated with manual material handling in the workplace. The Official Mexican Standard came into effect at the beginning of 2020, so let’s look at what this standard is and what it could potentially mean for you.

Who needs to know about NOM-036?

All companies that have facilities in Mexico should be familiar with NOM-036, as they are required to comply with the regulations found in the standard. Failure to do so can lead to fines up to $500,000 pesos (~$22,000 USD) per employee.

In what scenarios does NOM-036 apply?

NOM-036 applies to all workplaces where manual material handling activities, such as lifting/lowering, pushing/pulling, or carrying, occur routinely (more than once per day) and where loads weighing 3 kg (6.6 lb) or more are manually handled per person. In addition to this, NOM-036 has set in place maximum load limits that are age- and gender-specific.
