Shift work and fatigue is a hot topic in ergonomics right now. The National Institute of Safety and Health (NIOSH) has a section on their website dedicated to this. Resources include:

  • Training Course – NIOSH Training for Nurses on Shift Work and Long Hours. This accredited course educates nurses about the health and safety risks associated with fatigue, shift work, and long hours, and coping strategies for work and personal life. Though focused on nurses, much of the information can be generalized across industries.
  • Plain Language about Shift Work – a NIOSH booklet about work schedules, health and safety effects of shift work, and organizational and personal strategies for managing shift work
  • Educational Resources – A list of resources about sleep, shift work, and fatigue that covers several industries
  • Scientific Publications – A list of selected scientific publications about shift work, fatigue, and management strategies
